Unlocking Precision Insights from the Machine Tool Optimisation Event with Wai Yip Lee

By: Kathryn Gerardino-Elagio

In an exclusive conversation with International Metalworking News for Asia, Mr. Lee Wai Yip, General Manager of Hurco (S.E. Asia) Pte. Ltd., provided valuable insights from the recent Machine Tool Optimisation Event. Departing from their traditional annual open house, Hurco and their collaborative partners decided to organise a joint seminar at SIMTECH’s model factory. This half-day seminar, held outside their usual showroom, allowed customers to explore SIMTECH’s cutting-edge facility on a relaxed Friday afternoon.

The seminar focused on revisiting the basics of machining, emphasising practical strategies for optimising machine tools. Key topics included selecting the right cutting tools, maximising productivity through suitable coolant usage, and leveraging the solid model import feature for efficient shop floor programming. As joint organisers, Hurco and SIMTECH welcomed their respective customers, creating a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and industry networking.

Maximising Profitability with Cutting Tools

Cutting tools play a pivotal role in a machine shop’s profitability. While equipment selection and machine specifications are crucial, end-users often overlook the equally important tooling requirements. Wai Yip emphasised that selecting the right cutting tool and strategy ensures optimal surface quality and shorter cycle times. “By tailoring tools to material types and cutting approaches, companies can reduce overall tooling costs and enhance throughput, ultimately minimising scrap rates.”

He added, “Notably, circular segment or barrel cutters are gaining traction for machining 3D surfaces. These cutters significantly reduce cycle times compared to traditional ball nose cutters in specific 3D tool paths. However, their widespread adoption remains limited due to the need for simultaneous 5-axis tool paths and matured CAM programs or post processors.”

Navigating Material Quality and Cost Challenges in Machine Shops

The pandemic has exacerbated material quality and cost concerns for machine shops worldwide, explained Wai Yip. “Geopolitical tensions, including the Ukraine war and Gaza crisis, have severely disrupted material supply chains, leading to escalating costs. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), with limited raw material stock, face the brunt of these challenges. Relying heavily on spot market prices, they must seek alternative sources to manage costs and maintain competitive pricing.”

However, he mentioned that caution is essential when sourcing materials. “Obtaining them from unqualified or questionable suppliers jeopardises material integrity. Inferior quality can compromise the strength and surface finish of machined parts, resulting in higher scrap rates and reduced customer confidence. In extreme cases, it may accelerate tool wear and increase overall tooling costs.”

Fostering Transformation: Hurco’s Partnership with SIMTECH

“Since April 2022, we’ve proudly collaborated with SIMTECH’s model factory as a Smart Engineering System (SES) partner. In June 2023, we strategically placed our renowned VMX30UDi 5-axis machining center and TM8Mi C-axis turn mill within SIMTECH’s model factory, specifically to support the precision engineering industry, especially SMEs.

Our joint initiative aims to empower visitors by introducing them to the SES and Model Factory @ SIMTECH. By doing so, we provide a comprehensive view of the abundant resources available for transformation and competitiveness. Unlike individual suppliers who often focus solely on end-users’ specific needs, SIMTECH, as a government institution under A-Star, offers an objective, forward-looking perspective. Business owners seeking transformation, technology adoption, or diversification into new sectors can benefit from SIMTECH’s industry insights,” Wai Yip said.

Strategic Resource Synergy with SIMTECH

Wai Yip stated, “Our collaboration with SIMTECH extends beyond the machining group, enabling us to leverage their extensive resources. By connecting our customers with relevant departments, we support their growth plans effectively.

SIMTECH’s extensive expertise spans diverse domains, including additive manufacturing, material science, and surface treatment. By tapping into their seasoned teams, we empower our customers to address multifaceted challenges. Whether it’s optimising material choices, enhancing surface finishes, or exploring cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, our joint efforts provide comprehensive solutions tailored to individual growth trajectories.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often face resource constraints. Our collaboration ensures that SMEs can access specialised knowledge without the burden of maintaining in-house departments. SIMTECH’s successful track record in assisting similar projects positions them as reliable partners. Together, we guide businesses toward sustainable practices, innovation, and competitiveness in an ever-evolving industry landscape.”

Celebrating Event Success and Charting Our Path Ahead

According to Wai Yip, the resounding success of their recent event, organised in collaboration with its esteemed partners, fills them with immense satisfaction. The robust attendance and overwhelmingly positive feedback underscore the event’s significance.

“We seized the opportunity to unveil new products, cutting-edge technologies, and innovative programming strategies. Our live cutting demos showcased the exceptional performance of Hurco machines, leaving a lasting impression on attendees. By presenting these advancements, we not only highlighted our commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry but also empowered visitors with insights into the latest trends and solutions.

Our interactions with visitors went beyond mere pleasantries. We actively listened, delving into their unique requirements, pain points, and aspirations. Understanding their needs is pivotal for tailoring our support and solutions effectively. Whether it is a seasoned customer seeking process optimisation or a prospective client exploring their options, we are dedicated to providing personalised guidance,” he declared.

In closing, Wai Yip expressed, “An exciting goal for 2024 is to expand our installed base of Hurco machines. We envision more workshops, factories, and production lines benefiting from the precision, reliability, and versatility that define our brand. Our commitment to the industry goes beyond events—it is about forging lasting partnerships, driving innovation, and propelling the manufacturing landscape toward a brighter future.”
